Paper Cranes

Poetry for Peace Contest

The Poetry for Peace contest was held from 15 September until 14 October 2011. The winners were anounced at a ceremony at UN headquarters in New York.

Below is one of the contest entries.

It's quiet, this silence can kill
There is people moving around
 Yet time is standing still
BANG my world is upside down
 If you hold your breath
You might just hear
The sound in my peoples chest
That sketchy beat of fear
I must escape this tragedy
I can't see through my tears
It must be good to be
Anywhere but here
Take me to a safe place
There isn't one for miles
To think that only yesterday
I was all smiles
A river full of lifeless bodies
A river full of hopes and dreams
All their unheard stories
Will we ever know what they mean?
Will they ever find a voice?
We Are their voice
   We are their hope
We are their light at the end of the tunnel
          Only WE can raise awareness
          Its in our hands
             WE ARE PEACE
