Paper Cranes

Poetry for Peace Contest

The Poetry for Peace contest was held from 15 September until 14 October 2011. The winners were anounced at a ceremony at UN headquarters in New York.

Below is one of the contest entries.

The world is the home to all
The earth is where we all stand
All our memories, tears, joy and laughter are stored within
   the grounds of the earth
It is peaceful.

But when humanity takes control,
It creates a powerful force
One with destruction, terror, war and hate
It is vicious.

 Where did Peace go?
It wasn’t there when the atomic bomb hit Japan.
So where did it go?
Doesn’t it know, this world needs it so?

The tears in our eyes
The sorrow in our hearts
The worry in our minds
Far from the reach of the lost peace.

Peace.
Without it, we destroy the one thing we cannot live without,
This world.
With it, we are one.
And the peace is found.
