MISTY MEMORIES... The sunlight bounced off the thatch, But I had grabbed the hues in my eyes. Merrily I skipped homewards I knew I'd be happier inside. "Happy Birthday," my father beamed And I giggled and ran to him. He hoisted me on his lap, And began my birthday treat. "Once in an island," he said. How I loved his voice, The way his eyes twinkled when he spoke, Expressions flitting through his face. "What is an island?" I squeaked. Interrupting his tale with my doubt, The word sounded alien, my curiosity piqued Father always had an answer. "It's a piece of land surrounded by..." A thundering eclipsed his last word I felt the earth beneath me shake, And the fiery sky descended through our roof. He hugged me tight and we ran outside, I watched the my home crumble. Ashes and ashes sailed through the wind, Life before my eyes tumbled. "Remember I love you," my dad said. I saw him running towards my baby brother, And then smoke stung my eyes. Emptiness engulfed my heart.... "Blood, Blood" the cries echoed in my ears. Misery, Pain and Death swept past me, I looked them in the eye But they daren't... "A piece of land surrounded by blood," Now I knew what was an island... My world shattered before my eyes, The reason, one day I'd like to understand. A word of kindness A gesture of brotherhood A hug expressing a bond A smile soothing the soul Stamp them in your heart Begin at home and hearth Of Love there shouldn't be any dearth And step by step Peace shall reign on earth...
