Paper Cranes

Poetry for Peace Contest

The Poetry for Peace contest was held from 15 September until 14 October 2011. The winners were anounced at a ceremony at UN headquarters in New York.

Below is one of the contest entries.

sound of the plane
above the clouds
screams under the ruins
bomb crater
exhibited for years
spasm on the face
dead silence -
above Hiroshima
a single swallow
blossoming cherries
in Hiroshima still a smell
of bomb arson
in Hiroshima
blood frozen in the veins
on a summer day
children’s' games stopped
by the airplane
 a rose on the plane
drawn with crayon
by a child's hand
