Paper Cranes

Poetry for Peace Contest

The Poetry for Peace contest was held from 15 September until 14 October 2011. The winners were anounced at a ceremony at UN headquarters in New York.

Below is one of the contest entries.

Turmoil was unleashed from its cave.
Getting all environs of Nagasaki in disarray.
Mercy was scarce like dog's tears.
A place where humans and animals shiver with fear.
The casualties not only included the lost ones,
But we went in frantic search for our loved ones.

Our precious damsel, precious jewel who we nurture,
Keeping our dreams and hope in good posture,
could only be sustained among the living,
unless she jumps three floors of a building.
Despite internal damages and fractures
Death got us, taking our choice.

We have lost our Damsel, our Gem.
The broken pieces ate her up like germ
No record of memory scribbled
No source of remembrance even
From the Shiroyama Elementary School,
That would have made our sister's name
A lasting legacy for ages...
Peace Embalms A Chasm in our shattered Emotions.
