Paper Cranes

Poetry for Peace Contest

The Poetry for Peace contest was held from 15 September until 14 October 2011. The winners were anounced at a ceremony at UN headquarters in New York.

Below is one of the contest entries.

There is a place called peace
where showers of forgiveness
fall every morning
healing the petals of the oleander flower
and clearing the atmosphere
of yesterday's grief
the cicadas sing out songs of joy
and the sun of love rises
from the bosom of mother earth

In this land
the children of iwasa
dance freely on the streets
no fear in their hearts,no worries in their mind
a rainbow of grace stretches
from the seto inland sea to the hudson river
and the world basks under its beauty

This land of peace is not far from us
its in the inner cloves of our heart
it is who we are
so let's drop the burden
of war,arms,hate and strife
and walk hand in hand
through a path less taken
to a place worth going
