Paper Cranes

Poetry for Peace Contest

The Poetry for Peace contest was held from 15 September until 14 October 2011. The winners were anounced at a ceremony at UN headquarters in New York.

Below is one of the contest entries.

I Shall Celebrate

After this village becomes one
Without borders
With colour blind
Race blind
And religious blind beings

I shall celebrate
And religious blind beings
After this village becomes ours
Without bombs
Without landmines
Without grenades
Without guns and tear gases

I shall celebrate
After this village becomes clean
Of water pollution
Of air pollution
And land pollution

I shall celebrate
After this village becomes free
Of passports and visas
Of fear and inferiors
Of superhuman and superpowers

I shall celebrate
After this village becomes a home
For street kids
For displaced people
For poor people
For destitute
For orphans, the elderly and the disabled

I shall celebrate
After this village becomes free
Of AIDS
Of TB
Of Malaria
And Cancer

I shall celebrate
After habitats of this village stand together
Extending love for one another
Embracing every child
Left without a home
Without food
Without shelter
I shall celebrate in song
In poetry
In dance
In sculpture
In painting
And drawing
