Paper Cranes

Poetry for Peace Contest

The Poetry for Peace contest was held from 15 September until 14 October 2011. The winners were anounced at a ceremony at UN headquarters in New York.

Below is one of the contest entries.

Acid Dust

The dust is the only sound
Flesh singed, from once unbroken backs
The survivors, the victims of this attack
As it falls slowly from the rain cloud
For days, for months, for years they cry
How human is it to treat another this way
To witness the craft of war, the innocents it slayed
They suffer so much we hide our eyes
Bricks to earth, life to death
People who were just living their lives
Sisters, brothers, husbands and wives
They gasp, they sigh, one last breath
The dust is dancing, falling soft with acid pain
Silent agony invades the mind
A kamikaze revenge of atomic design
Mankind must realize this can't happen again
