Paper Cranes

Poetry for Peace Contest

The Poetry for Peace contest was held from 15 September until 14 October 2011. The winners were anounced at a ceremony at UN headquarters in New York.

Below is one of the contest entries.

Little Boy

Little boy, little boy,

What are you doing here?

Do you wish to see my family

To tell them you are near?

Do you wish to see my family

And have a short stay?

Don’t you have somewhere to run to?

Somewhere else to go and play?

Little boy, little boy,

Why aren’t you speaking?

It would be helpful if you would tell me,

What is that smell you’re reeking?

Little boy, little boy,

I wouldn’t do that if I were you.

Please go back to where you came from

Please take your backpack, too.

Little boy, little boy,

What do you think you’re doing?

I knew from the moment I saw you,

Trouble was surely brewing.

Little boy, little boy,

What was your purpose here?!

Do you truly wish to see my family

Break down in utter fear?
