Paper Cranes

Poetry for Peace Contest

The Poetry for Peace contest was held from 15 September until 14 October 2011. The winners were anounced at a ceremony at UN headquarters in New York.

Below is one of the contest entries.

Chains

The wailing and shrieking
Pierces through the air
As tears fill the pitch-black sky.
Fiery destruction and desolation;
Nothing is left...
Like a tree stripped bare of its leaves
After a harsh winter.
A mark is made,
A scar is left,
And the chains of sorrow,
Heavy and burdensome,
Forever remains
Even when spring comes.
But there is a path toward freedom,
A way to loosen these chains:
Its name is peace.
Peace that lessens the pain...
Peace that comes down like rain,
Watering the spring flowers,
Healing the tree,
And rusting these chains.
