Paper Cranes

Poetry for Peace Contest

The Poetry for Peace contest was held from 15 September until 14 October 2011. The winners were anounced at a ceremony at UN headquarters in New York.

Below is one of the contest entries.

First uninterested.
Yet,
To find myself
Completely rapt
Into a different universe.
A universe full of
Agony
Violence
Sorrow
The inaudible cries
And screams
Of innocent civilians.
Confused,
Crying children.
A city
Filled with flames
Of ferocious
Fervor fire.
A still hopeful father
Holding his ash covered daughter
Full of passion
Who can only now wish.
Only wishing for the end of war.
Only wishing for peace.
As I listen to the voices of the victims
As I read the words of the lost
A clenching consciousness
Can only come over me.
If only just a poem
Can make a difference
To help bring aware
I say
Why not try?
