The Poetry for Peace contest was held from 15 September until 14 October 2011. The winners were anounced at a ceremony at UN headquarters in New York.
Below is one of the contest entries.
I Thought It was the Apocalypse The apocalypse in the black egg, Fell from the aircraft And I could hear The faint explosion as the airplane zoomed away And I could see As I turned back The overwhelming orange cloud, followed with white fumes Choked the city, drowned the sky And I could smell The smoke suffocating my passageways And I could taste The sharpness of my parched throat And I could feel My eyes burning with tears, the drops rolling down Onto my shaking hands, fingers interlocked with one another as I prayed.
