Paper Cranes

Poetry for Peace Contest

The Poetry for Peace contest was held from 15 September until 14 October 2011. The winners were anounced at a ceremony at UN headquarters in New York.

Below is one of the contest entries.

Peaceful war

I stood still, from afar, and nearby, and felt,
A devastating compassion,
A profound grief
As I watched the 'world' as I know it
Subside into one massive rubble
I could not sit down and watch
I decided to make
Infernos acquaint with still waters
And meet in serenity
To make the great flames hushed as they passed
From one peaceful presence to another
I'm no superman nor have I done great deeds
But this much I can be- a carrier of hope undefined
To let the aggrieved spirits know love is possible
To speak to the wounded souls of the peace I know
I will be but a voice
Saying again and again,
Repeating
The language of influence and affection that is peace
That gluttony and damage hold back.
