Paper Cranes

Poetry for Peace Contest

The Poetry for Peace contest was held from 15 September until 14 October 2011. The winners were anounced at a ceremony at UN headquarters in New York.

Below is one of the contest entries.

Sisterhood

A flash of light
that would forever
CHANGE
the lives of Yoshi
and an
unrecognized angel.
Sisterhood.
A survivor and
a victim
of the atomic bomb.
The angel jumped
for her life.
which would last
ten more days.
Yoshi lives on.
Sisterhood.
She survives
war and rage
only to be left
a victim of
haunting memories
on that August day.
Yoshi
with quiet grace
gives her
sister a name.
The unrecognized angel
will finally
be recognized
as a victim of war.
The angel survives.
Within the heart of her sister.
Sisterhood.
As Yoshi remembers
she gives
LIFE to the
unrecognized angel.
Yoshi and the angel
are interchangeable
as survivor and victim.
Sisterhood.
