Poetry for Peace Contest

The Poetry for Peace contest was held from 15 September until 14 October 2011. The winners were anounced at a ceremony at UN headquarters in New York.

Below is one of the contest entries.

VOICE FROM THE GRAVE

THE ICY HANDS OF DEATH LAY UPON US STILL, THOUGH THE APPLICATION OF DEATH
    WE DID NOT FILL
NOW THE RULE OF THE OTHER WORLD WE HAVE TO SUBMIT,
THE COURSE OF THIS INSTITUTION WE HAVE TO COMPLETE
BUT CAN WE SPEAK OF THIS, FOR IT IS A PLACE OF ETERNITY
A PLACE WHERE THERE IS NO RESPECT FOR VANITY
I STAND OUT OF MY BODY AND I SEE IT LAY THERE COLD,
THOSE RESPONSIBLE FOR SCARING BREATH OUT OF ME WALK CHEST-OUT
    AND THEIR CHIN UP, BOLD
FOR WHAT WAS USED TO SCARE BREATH OUT OF ME WAS A GUN-STONE,
THIS STONE CAME CUTTING THROUGH MY SKIN BREAKING MY HIP-BONE
I SEE SOME RELATIVES CRYING, WAILING, SHAKING MY BODY AS I LAY THERE
MOTIONLESS FOR THE RETURN OF MY SOUL,
I EVEN SEE THE FLOW OF RIVER FROM THE EYES OF A SUPPOSED FOE.
WHAT IS IT THAT HAS CAUSED ME TO EMBARK ON THIS TRANSITION,
WALKING THE ROAD OF AN UNPREPARED JOURNEY DUE TO A WRONG ACTION???,
IT IS WAR, IT IS BATTLE,
CAN ANY LIVING HEAR WHAT MY MOUTH HAS STARTED TO PADDLE.
A MAN PLAYS WITH A TRIGGER, AS A HUSBAND AND A WIFE IN THEIR MATRIMONIAL
ROOM WILL LIGHT UP A GENTLE FIRE,
BUT HIS IS NOT ECSTASY BUT A BAD THING TO SEE, HIS IS MURDER AND
JAH BLOOD HE SPILLS, A KILL AND A LIFE IF STEALS.
THERE IS A THIN LINE BETWEEN MORTALITY AND IMMORTALITY,
IF ANYONE CAN HEAR THE VOICE FROM THE GRAVE, CAN HE OR SHE TELL IT TO
THE WAR MONGERS AND TO THE WAR LORDS,
SHOULD THEY CROSS THIS THIN LINE, IN SUCH A STATE, THEY WON'T HAVE
NO PLACE IN THE PARADISE OF ETERNITY.
