Paper Cranes

Poetry for Peace Contest

The Poetry for Peace contest was held from 15 September until 14 October 2011. The winners were anounced at a ceremony at UN headquarters in New York.

Below is one of the contest entries.

THE ATOMIC BOMB

Time August ninth, 1941
Location Japan
Young innocent children playing
Regular, ordinary people, going on with their daily lives
Until something horrific
Terrifying...just gruesome
It was dreadful
It was...an atomic bomb
Chaos, confusion, pandemonium everywhere
People lost...confused...scared
Eager to be aware of if their family is alive
If they are safe
If they are hurt
So many questions going on in their heads
Not even having an idea of what is going on around them
In shock
Children without parents
Humans without homes
Radiation...deadly
All resulted because of an atomic bomb
First and last use in history so far...
