Paper Cranes

Poetry for Peace Contest

The Poetry for Peace contest was held from 15 September until 14 October 2011. The winners were anounced at a ceremony at UN headquarters in New York.

Below is one of the contest entries.

Soaring through the sky

Soaring through the sky are birds and planes.
Soaring through the sky are nice white clouds.
Soaring through the sky, ever so brightly is the sun.
Soaring through the sky is an unfamiliar dark shadow.
Soaring through the sky is a big ball of material falling from way up high.
Soaring through the sky are two shadows but one fading away slightly.
Soaring through the sky are gasps of air from all looking at this object.
Soaring through the sky is a big white flash that
blinds the view of my wonderful town.
Soaring through the sky is nothing but ash and what was left of my town.
Soaring through the sky are falling birds and destroyed airplanes.
Soaring through the sky is a bright orange sun.
Soaring through the sky is nuclear radiation.
Soaring through the sky is nothing but dust for the next few months.
Soaring through the sky are choppers and help.

Soaring through the sky of my mind are the memories of my loved ones
and the feeling of how lucky I am to be here.

Soaring through the sky are the souls lost on that day
may they never be forgotten.
