Paper Cranes

Poetry for Peace Contest

The Poetry for Peace contest was held from 15 September until 14 October 2011. The winners were anounced at a ceremony at UN headquarters in New York.

Below is one of the contest entries.

Scars

The sound so loud, I'm unable to hear;
Light so bright that I cannot see.
But to regain my senses is to realize,
The horror of reality.

The cries of my people echo throughout;
Their pain is too much to bear.
Bodies are scattered across the ground.
The stench of burnt flesh fills the air.

My mother gone, my father too;
My brothers and sisters — dead.
I may have survived, but effects are so great
That I'd rather be with them instead.
