Paper Cranes

Poetry for Peace Contest

The Poetry for Peace contest was held from 15 September until 14 October 2011. The winners were anounced at a ceremony at UN headquarters in New York.

Below is one of the contest entries.

Helpless people frightened
Inside their homes terrified
Running from the bomb
Of all places it’s here
Scared children crying for parents
History was made
Injured and scarred
Mothers looking for children
And children looking for their mother

August 6th 1945
Never saw it coming
Dead bodies on the ground

No warning for the people
A terrible day
Green grasses turned black
All of nature died out
Seeing the bomb drop from the sky
Asking themselves what’s that in the sky
Knowing it was for them
Inside their hearts they didn’t know why
