Paper Cranes

Poetry for Peace Contest

The Poetry for Peace contest was held from 15 September until 14 October 2011. The winners were anounced at a ceremony at UN headquarters in New York.

Below is one of the contest entries.

Pain.

I know it's difficult to comprehend
so much suffering and heartache
did anyone think to ask the question
how much suffering can the heart take

Imagine the most horrific of acts
the kind one could never justify
then repeatedly hearing the story
those that tell it I can imagine why...

Life.

The most precious of gifts
held in the highest regard
working for nuclear disarmament
this decision shouldn't be hard

After reading the testimonials
we must restore sight to the blind
there's a lesson to be learned from the hibakusha
it's important to keep in mind...

Peace.
