Paper Cranes

Poetry for Peace Contest

The Poetry for Peace contest was held from 15 September until 14 October 2011. The winners were anounced at a ceremony at UN headquarters in New York.

Below is one of the contest entries.

Why and How

Why do you have to use a strong weapon like that?

How about the inanest people?

Thousands of people died and half of them

Didn’t even now it was coming.

How would you feel if you were in one of the victim’s shoes?

You wouldn’t like it would you

Having family friends just pass before your eyes.

Seeing all but black smoke that you caused.

It’s easy to just give up and know that there

Are thousands of people that you are hurting?

Why is it so hard to see that the ones you hurt are humans like you?

Why are you doing this?

It’s not right just let people live their lives.

Why is it that you are this?

Become good and leave the evil side.

Can’t we just have peace?
