Paper Cranes

Poetry for Peace Contest

The Poetry for Peace contest was held from 15 September until 14 October 2011. The winners were anounced at a ceremony at UN headquarters in New York.

Below is one of the contest entries.

I thought of peace in a
       different way..
I thought it to be easy
        to come in my way.
 So I simply jumped in
         the ocean of uncertainty..
 Hold my self easy &
         swam the way.

  I used my own techniques
        my version, my thoughts
  & defined peace.

  Peace was the love I
         felt for others..
   It was always innocent
       like a child &
      humble like a saint.

 As I move forward I
 came across the rocks..
   the tides, the storm
   & the sharks.

They were pushing me
   backward making me..
 feel every now &
    then that I will
 have to pay a price
  If I move forward.

  I was hurt, I was
    dejected,I was weak..
  I was about to collapse
    I heard a sound..
  calling me from far
     help, help!
   someone was drowning.

For a moment I forgot my
I pushed hard to move forward
in that direction to save the child.

    I faced the wind
     was down..
I had to collect all my strength
      But I succeeded in reaching
    where that voice which was
        calling me!
      Yes! I saved that child.
          I felt alive! I felt
        happy.Yes! peace to me
is the smile of that innocent child.
        Which gave me life!
        Which gave me peace!
