Paper Cranes

Poetry for Peace Contest

The Poetry for Peace contest was held from 15 September until 14 October 2011. The winners were anounced at a ceremony at UN headquarters in New York.

Below is one of the contest entries.

I heard a cry,
The longer I heard,the more it multiplied;
An endless rhapsody of parched pain
Laced still with the hope of rain

Autumn winds gave way to spring;
The painful cries continued to ring;
And seasons continued to change.
The pain remained constant, only changing in name

Crystal clear agony became hard to bear;
Like shards of glass piercing mind-numbing fear
Bullets and bombs passed on the blame;
Peace had almost become a matter of game

But that cry of agony, may finally stir the complacency
to move towards action combined with compassionate intensity
