Paper Cranes

Poetry for Peace Contest

The Poetry for Peace contest was held from 15 September until 14 October 2011. The winners were anounced at a ceremony at UN headquarters in New York.

Below is one of the contest entries.

HAIKUS FOR HIBAKUSHA

I.

Illumination
Is not the effect of light.
Silence...eternal.

II.

In this blinding light,
We no longer recognize
Our face nor our soul.

III.

The sound of fission
Deafens the ears of many
To words left unsaid.

IV.

He attempts to drain
Salt from tears to understand
How forgiveness works.

V.

In the fading light
Let our fingers intertwine.
Pain can also fade.
