Sergio Duarte Retires
Mr. Sergio Duarte ended a distinguished tenure as the United Nations High Representative for Disarmament Affairs on 29 February 2012. Mr. Duarte had held the post four and a half years since his appointment on 2 July 2007 by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. Prior to his work at the United Nations, Mr. Duarte was a career diplomat in the Brazilian Foreign Service, well-known in disarmament and non-proliferation circles. He and his wife will return to his native Brazil shortly.
