2000 Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons

From 24 April to 19 May 2000, the States parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) convened in New York for another review conference of the Treaty, in fact the sixth such conference convened in accordance with article VIII, paragraph 3, of the Treaty since it entered into force on 5 March 1970.
The Conference was the first since the Treaty&rsquot;s indefinite extension in May 1995. The decision to extend the obligations under the Treaty
indefinitely
was taken together with agreements on strengthening its review process and a set of principles and objectives for nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament, which set benchmarks to measure the performance of the States parties in the progressive implementation of the Treaty.
In addition, as part of the package of decisions, the States parties adopted a resolution on the Middle East, sponsored by the three depositaries of the Treaty, which reaffirmed the importance of establishing a zone free of all weapons of mass destruction in the region.
