53rd Session of the Commission for Social Development (CSocD53)
The Commission for Social Development is a functional commission of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) of the United Nations. The 53rd Session of this Commission (CSocD53) will take place from 4-13 February 2015 at United Nations Headquarters in New York. The priority theme for the 2015-2016 review and policy cycle will be “Rethinking and strengthening social development in the contemporary world”.

Report of the Secretary-General to the 53rd session of the Commission for Social Development
The most recent report of the Secretary-General entitled “Further implementation of the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing, 2002″ (E/CN.5/2015/4) has been issued and is available in all official languages of the United Nations. The report focuses on the feedback received from Member States and relevant stakeholders on: (a) a possible theme or themes for the third review and appraisal of the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing; (b) how the review and appraisal process could better contribute to advancing the social integration and broad-based participation of older persons in development; and (c) how the mainstreaming of issues related to ageing and older persons into the work of the functional commissions of the Economic and Social Council could be achieved, as well as options for future modalities for the third review and appraisal process.

2015 AARP-UN Briefing Series on Global Ageing
On the occasion of the 53rd session of the Commission for Social Development, AARP is jointly organising with the Focal Point on Ageing an international high-level forum for best practices and policy solutions on “How Should Ageing be Accounted for in Post 2015 Sustainable Development” (New York, 5-6 February 2015) – by invitation.

Report of the Workshop on the Social Integration and Rights of Older Persons in the Asia-Pacific region
DESA, UNESCAP and the Asia-Pacific Forum of National Human Rights Institutions (APF), with the support of UNFPA, HelpAge International and the International Federation of Ageing, jointly organised a workshop on the Social Integration and Rights of Older Persons in the Asia-Pacific region (Bangkok, 30 September – 2 October 2014).

The theme of this year’s 25th commemoration of the International Day of Older Persons (1 October) is “Sustainability and Age Inclusiveness in the Urban Environment”.
