Oil-for-Food Background Information

 

Update for the period 11 to 17  September

During the week to 17 September 1999, Iraq exported a total of 13.4 million barrels of crude oil for an estimated revenue of $281 million dollars. Since oil exports under Phase VI began on 1 June there have been 234.5 million barrels exported for an estimated revenue of $4.215 billion. To date, about 44 per cent of loadings have been made at Ceyhan.

The Security Council's 661 Committee has approved 79 contracts for the export of Iraqi oil with with a total volume of 372.7 million barrels (207.5m Basrah Light, 165.2m Kirkuk).

The Office of the Iraq Programme has now received 414 contracts for humanitarian supplies worth $1.07 billion under Phase VI. Of the 243 contracts circulated to the Security Council's 661 Committee, 166 worth $544.7 million have been approved and 30, worth $58.61 million, have been put on hold.

So far $1.56 billion worth of contracts for humanitarian supplies have been approved under Phase IV and $1.42 billion under Phase V. There are $45.62 million dollars worth of humanitarian supplies on hold in Phase IV and $332.86 million on hold in Phase V.

The 661 Committee has approved $244.64 million worth of oil spare parts and equipment in Phase IV and put $41.09 million on hold. For Phase V, $109.56 million in oil sector equipment has been approved and $83.43 million is currently on hold. Supplies purchased under the programme continue to arrive normally: Arrivals over the past week included: 26,568 tonnes of rice, 7800 tonnes of cooking oil, various pharmaceuticals and surgical appliances, vaccine against foot and mouth disease, spare parts for combine harvesters, school desks and 17,800kg of high protein biscuits (for use in the three northern governorates).
