Oil-for-Food Background Information

Update for the period 4 to 10 September

During the week to 10 September 1999, Iraq exported a total of 17.0 million barrels of crude oil for an estimated revenue of $356 million dollars. Since oil exports under Phase VI began on 1 June there have been 221.1 million barrels exported for an estimated revenue of $3.911 billion. To date, about 44 per cent of loadings have been made at Ceyhan.

The Security Council's 661 Committee has approved 79 contracts for the export of Iraqi oil with with a total volume of 372.5 million barrels (207.3m Basrah Light, 165.2m Kirkuk).

The Office of the Iraq Programme has now received 368 contracts for humanitarian supplies worth $972.09 million under Phase VI. Of the 186 contracts circulated to the Security Council's 661 Committee, 120 worth $467.73 million have been approved and 10, worth $36.37 million, have been put on hold.

So far $1.561 billion worth of contracts for humanitarian supplies have been approved under Phase IV and $1.42 billion under Phase V. There are $42.14 million dollars worth of humanitarian supplies on hold in Phase IV and $294.49 million on hold in Phase V.

The 661 Committee has approved $244.59 million worth of oil spare parts and equipment in Phase IV and put $41 million on hold. For Phase V, $107 million in oil sector equipment has been approved and $82.18 million is currently on hold. Supplies purchased under the programme continue to arrive normally: Arrivals over the past week included: 94,841 tonnes of wheat, 12,030 tonnes of pulses, vaccines against measles, mumps, diptheria and tetanus, chlorine gas, broiler hatching eggs, school desks and generating sets.
