Oil-for-Food Background Information

 

Update for the period 31 July to 6 August 1999

During the week to 6 August 1999, Iraq exported a total of 11.8 million barrels of crude oil for an estimated revenue of $212 million dollars. Since oil exports under Phase VI began on 1 June there have been 135.9 million barrels exported for an estimated revenue of about $2.235 billion. To date, about 45 per cent of loadings have been made at Ceyhan.

The Security Council's 661 Committee approved three additional contracts for the export of Iraqi oil. This brings the total contracts approved to 78 with a total volume of 371.1 million barrels (206.3m Basrah Light, 164.8m Kirkuk).

The Office of the Iraq Programme has now received 63 contracts for humanitarian supplies worth $357.33 million under Phase VI. To date, eleven contracts with a value of $19.090 million have been circulated to the 661 Committee.

So far $1.542 billion worth of contracts for humanitarian supplies have been approved under Phase IV and $1.364 billion under Phase V. There are $55.8 million dollars worth of humanitarian supplies on hold in Phase IV and $304.2 million on hold in Phase V.

The 661 Committee has approved $243.013 million worth of oil spare parts and equipment in Phase IV and put $40.9 million on hold. For Phase V, $68.8 million in oil sector equipment has been approved and $83.9 million is currently on hold. Goods purchased under the programme continue to arrive normally: Arrivals over the past two weeks included: 28,798 tonnes of rice, 24,349 tonnes of tea, 14,800 tonnes of sugar and 2,546 tonnes of cooking oil. Other arrivals included various pharmaceuticals, class room furniture desks, garbage disposal trucks and electrical equipment, among other items. To date around $82.6 million dollars of oil sector equipment purchased under the terms of resolution 1175 (1998) has arrived in Iraq.
