Oil-for-Food Background Information

 

Weekly Update for 14 December 1998

 

In the week from 5 to 11 December there were seven loadings of Iraqi oil totalling 11.8 million barrels with an estimated value of $84 million.

The Oil Overseers report that in the same period an additional eleven contracts were approved for the sale of oil. Three contracts were sent to the Security Council's 661 Committee for their consideration and three are pending for lack of supporting documentation.

So far in the current phase which began on 26 November, 45 contracts for the sale of oil have been submitted and 37 approved for a total of 148.7 million barrels (64.6 million Basrah Light and 84.1 million Kirkuk).

The Security Council's 661 Committee approved a further 15 contracts for humanitarian supplies under Phase IV for a total of 581 contracts with a total value of $1.485 billion. There were no additional contracts received or approved for Phase III.

At the port of Umm Qasr and the three land border crossings, humanitarian supplies continued to arrive including: 87,000 tonnes of wheat, 2123 tonnes of sugar, 7100 tonnes of cooking oil, 1046 tonnes of powdered infant formula, various medicines, power station spare parts, school desks and more broiler hatching eggs.

During the week to 11 December, the 661 Committee approved 20 contracts for the import into Iraq of oil spare parts and equipment worth $6,666,031. Two of the approved contracts were released from hold with a total value of $407,730. The total number of contracts approved so far is 218 for $127,051,090.

The Office of the Iraq Programme received an additional 15 oil sector contracts worth $5,541,005. The total number of contracts now received is 412 for a total value of $212,110,725. The Committee put on hold three contracts worth $1,876,260. There are now 120 contracts on hold worth $40,303,392.
