MEETING OF STATES PARTIES

      SPECIAL  MEETING OF STATES PARTIES TO THE UNITED NATIONS CONVENTION ON THE LAW OF THE SEA

      The Special Meeting of States Parties to the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea was held at Headquarters on Wednesday, 30 January 2008, to elect one member of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea, in accordance with article 4 of Annex VI to the Convention (Statute of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea). The provisional agenda of the Meeting was contained in document SPLOS/L.53.

      Opening of the Special Meeting by the President of the Seventeenth Meeting . . . . . [1]

      The President of the Seventeenth Meeting of States Parties opened the Special Meeting.

      For the purposes of conducting its business, the Special Meeting decided to retain the

      composition of the Bureau, including the presidency, as elected by the Seventeenth

      Meeting and the composition of the Credentials Committee, as appointed by the

      Seventeenth Meeting.

      Mr. Ridas Petkus (Lithuania), Chairman of the Credentials Committee, made a statement

      introducing the report of the Committee.

      The Meeting approved the report of the Credentials Committee, which would be issued as

      document SPLOS/169.

      Election of one member of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea . . . . . [6]

      The President made a statement.

      The Meeting proceeded with the first round of balloting.

      The President made a statement announcing the results of the first ballot.

      In the first ballot, the following candidate obtained the required majority of two-thirds of

      States Parties present and voting: Mr. Gao, Zhiguo (China).

      The President made a statement congratulating Mr. Zhiguo Gao on his election as member

      of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea.

      The representative of China made a statement.

      The Meeting was adjourned.
