PROFILE
The Mineral Resources Section (MRS) of the Environment and Natural Resources Management Division assists ESCAP Members in the formulation and implementation of policies, plans and programmes directed at
- assessment, sustainable development and management of their land and mineral resources, and the
- prevention and reduction of human and financial losses caused by geology-related natural disasters.
The MRS has a wide range of publications , including a series entitled 'Atlas of Mineral Resources of the ESCAP Region'. For more information on publications, please send an email to the address below or write to the section directly.
The MRS Staff are responsible for a variety of Main Functions aimed at sustainable development and management of land and mineral resources of Asia and the Pacific region, including those offshore.
The Mineral Resources section is currently staffed by the following professionals, whose expertise includes the earth sciences:
- Anatoly P. Kadushkin, Officer-in-Charge, focusing on mineral resources assessment as well as environmental management of mineral development;
- Kemin Dao, Economic Affairs Officer, focusing on aspects of integrated coastal zone management, including non-living marine resource assessment;
- Dulip Jayawardena, Economic Affairs Officer, assisting in the promotion of foreign direct investment in the mineral sector, by focusing on environmental, legal and social aspects of mining, while dealing with offshore mineral (incl. oil and gas) development issues;
- Huub van Wees, Scientific Affairs Officer, responsible for the ESCAP efforts to integrate geology in land-use and urban planning, by promoting the use of environmental and urban geology, incl. measures to reduce losses caused by geology-related natural disasters;
- Henri Maire, Regional Adviser on Mineral Policy, involved in advising Member Governments in all aspects of mineral development policy - incl. environmental policy - while assisting in project formulation and fund-raising.
