June
:: Special Meeting to Mark 60 Years of Dispossession of Palestine Refugees
UN Headquarters, New York, 20 June 2008

The Meeting was held under the auspices of the United Nations Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People. The objective of the Meeting was to draw the attention of the international community to the fact that it had been 60 years since vast numbers of Palestinians had been forced to leave their homes and property as a result of the 1948 hostilities. Those Palestinians have remained refugees until today. Their refugee status has been passed from generation to generation, yet their plight has received little attention from the world community and the issue remains unresolved. The Committee is convinced that without a just solution of the question of Palestine refugees, lasting peace between Israelis and Palestinians cannot be achieved.

The Chairman of the Committee opened the Meeting, followed by statements by the representatives of Palestine and the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). Experts on the issue presented their views on the situation of Palestine refugees, and prospects and modalities for finding a solution to the issue. All United Nations Members and Observers were invited to participate in the Meeting. Civil society organizations were invited to participate as observers.
