008 FIXED-LENGTH DATA ELEMENTS

See MARC21 for descriptions of all 008 character positions.

Positions 00-11, 17, 29, 31, 38 and 39 are defined the same way for all formats in UNBIS, i.e., there are default settings.  Positions 12-16, 28, 32 and 33 are defined differently for different formats and different content values.

Fixed fields entered in 008 include the following:

Position 00 - 05:
Date of record creation.  Computer generated in the pattern
 «yymmdd».

Example:

040316.

Position 06:
Direct or indirect geographic subheading.  UNBIS headings are not subdivided geographically, so the default is set at «#», i.e., blank (Not subdivided geographically).

Position 07:
Romanization scheme. Indicates whether the 1XX contains the romanized form of the headings and, if so, identifies the romanization scheme. In UNBIS, the default is «n» (Not applicable).

Position 09:
Type of record.  Indicates whether the record represents an established or unestablished 1XX heading. In UNBIS, the default value is «a» (Established heading).

Position 10:
Descriptive cataloguing rules. Identifies the descriptive cataloguing rules used to formulate the 1XX name or title heading in established heading records. In UNBIS, the default value is «n» (Not applicable).

Position 11:
Subject heading system/thesaurus. Identifies the subject heading system/thesaurus building conventions used to formulate the 150 heading in established heading records. In UNBIS, the default value is «z» (Other).

Position 12:
Type of series. Indicates the type of series heading contained in the 130 field in a name authority record. In UNBIS, the default value is «n» (Not applicable).

Position 13:
Numbered or unnumbered series. Indicates the numbering characteristics of the series (or series-like phrase) represented by the 130 heading. In UNBIS, the default value is «n» (Not applicable).

Position 14:
Heading use--main or added entry. Indicates whether the heading is appropriate for use as a main or added entry in bibliographic records. For Thesaurus and geographic name headings, the default value is «b», not appropriate for use as a main or added entry.

Position 15:
Heading use-subject added entry. Indicates whether the 1XX heading is appropriate for use as a subject added entry in bibliographic records. For Thesaurus and geographic name headings, the default value is «a», appropriate for use as a subject added entry.

Position 16:
Series added entry. Indicates whether the heading is appropriate for use as a series added entry in bibliographic records. For Thesaurus and geographic name headings, the default value is «b», not appropriate for use as a series added entry.

Position 17:
Type of subject subdivision. Indicates the type of subject subdivision heading contained in the 1XX field of an established heading record. UNBIS Thesaurus and geographic name headings are not subdivided, so the default value is «n» (Not applicable).

Position 28:
Type of government agency. Indicates whether the heading represents a government agency and, if so, the jurisdictional level of the agency. This is applied only to 110 or 111 headings and should otherwise be blank. In UNBIS, the default value is «#», i.e., blank (Not a government agency).

Position 29:
Reference evaluation. Indicates whether the 4XX/5XX tracing fields in a record have been evaluated for consistency with the rules used to formulate the 1XX heading in the record. In UNBIS, the default value is «#», i.e., blank (Undefined).

Position 31:
Record status. Indicates whether a record update is in progress. In UNBIS, the default value is «a» (Record can be used).

Position 32:
Undifferentiated personal name. Indicates whether a personal name heading is used by one person or by two or more persons. In UNBIS, the default value is «n» (Not applicable).

Position 33:
Level of establishment. Indicates the extent to which the heading conforms to descriptive cataloguing rules or thesaurus conventions.

a= Fully established.
b = Memorandum. The heading is fully established but has not been used in a bibliographic record.
c = Provisional.
d = Preliminary. In UNBIS, the default value is «d» (Preliminary).

When the record is revised, the code is changed to «a» (Fully established).

Position 38:
Modified record. Indicates whether the record is modified from its intended content. In UNBIS, the default value is «#», i.e., blank (Not modified).

Position 33:
Cataloguing source. Indicates the creator of an authority record. In UNBIS, the default value is «d» (Other sources).
