Introduction
The UNBIS Name Authority File contains the authorized, or established, forms of names -
personal, corporate, meeting and uniform title -
to be used as access points in UNBIS bibliographic and speech records.

It also contains tracing fields for variant and related headings and notes, recording such information as the sources used to establish the heading and series treatment.

This UNBIS reference manual provides instructions for creating name authority records. In general, it adheres to Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules (AACR2) and MARC 21 Format for Authority Data guidelines but also reflects the practice of the Dag Hammarskjöld Library which evolved in the pre-AACR2 and pre-MARC environment to meet the challenging demand of describing UN documentation.

This manual is supplemented by the UNBIS Guidelines for Name Authorities - Policies and Practice, which cover in greater detail the form of personal, corporate, conference and title headings found in the UNBIS environment.

Note: In the instructions which follow, field and subfield repeatability/non-repeatability is indicated by «R» or «NR».
