785 SUCCEEDING ENTRY

Local notes concerning chronological relationships between serials that include DHL call numbers are recorded in field 592 in addition to the notes recorded in 780 and 785. Notes on UN documents that are cancelled, superseded, replaced or withdrawn are recorded in field 515.

[Prior to September 2003, all notes concerning chronological relationships between bibliographic items were recorded in field 592]

Use this field to describe the chronological relationship between the item being described and its immediate successor.

A corresponding field 780 (Preceding Entry) should be added to the bibliographic record for the later entry.

If more than one title is involved, multiple 785 fields are entered.

Introductory terms or phrases ( «Continued by:», «Superseded by», «Absorbed by:», etc.) are generated as display constants based on specified indicator values for field 785, and should not be recorded manually in field 785.

Do not place a period at the end of the 785 field.

Indicators

The first indicator specifies whether or not a display note («Continued by:»,«Superseded by», «Absorbed by:», etc.) will be generated.

First indicator 0 specifies that a note will be displayed with system-generated terms and phrases (display constants) based on the second indicator value.

First indicator 1 specifies that a system-generated note will not be displayed. This is the case when a note generated from the second indicator value (with display constants «Continued by:», «Superseded by», «Absorbed by:», etc.) would not adequately describe the bibliographic relationship. In this case, the first indicator value 1 is entered and a note about the bibliographic relationship is recorded in a 580 Linking Entry Complexity Note.

Note: First indicator 1 is also used, and the bibliographic relationship is described in a 580 note, when the second indicator value is 6 or 7.

The second indicator specifies the relationship between the item described and the succeeding entry. The second indicator generates a display constant for a note, when the first indicator value is 0.
Click here for the list of constants in the 2nd indicator, when the 1st indicator value is 0.

Subfields

Certain subfields are required if applicable ($t, $x, $g) while other subfields are optional. See MARC 21 for a complete list and descriptions of 785 subfields.

Notice that the title is recorded not in subfield $a but in subfield $t.

For Non-UN materials

The DHL policy is to catalogue a serial number under the latest title, with former titles noted in the same record in tag 247 (Former Title). For complex relationship between varying titles tag 547 (Former Title Complexity Note) is used.

This does not refer to «merger of» and «split into» cases, for which the policy is the same for both UN and non-UN materials.

A note about the bibliographic relationship with local information (e.g. «call number») is recorded in tag 592 (Local Relationship Note).
