For items including several works but lack a collective title, added entries for titles recorded in field 245 subsequent to the first title may be given in field 740. Use field 246 only for variant forms of the title recorded in tag 245 and variants of the first title in field 245 for collections lacking a collective title.

Use judgement in recording analytical titles in tag 740. When titles are transcribed in a contents note (tag 505), or when annex titles or other partial contents are transcribed in a 500 note, it is not necessary to systematically record them also in repeats of tag 740 since they may be retrieved by keyword title/note searches. Titles should be recorded in tag 740 only if they are meaningful and distinctive, if patrons are likely to search by them as alphabetic (left-anchored) titles or if it would be helpful to display them as independent titles.

If a uniform title authority record exists for an analytical title, record the title in authority-controlled field 730 instead of in field 740 uncontrolled title entry.

Record the related/analytical title in subfield $a of field 740. In current UNBIS practice, other subfields are not used in field 740.

If the first word in the title in tag 740 is a numeral or a spelled-out number, add another field 740 and record the title with the other form of the number.

If the first word in the title recorded in field 740 is an article, specify in the first indicator the number of characters (letters plus a space) that are to be disregarded in sorting and filing by title. Otherwise, leave a blank ( _ ) as the first indicator value.

Enter the value 2 as the second indicator if the title recorded in field 740 is an analytical entry. Otherwise, leave it blank ( _ ).

In current UNBIS practice, a period is not placed at the end of field 740.
