110 MAIN ENTRY - CORPORATE NAME

Authority-controlled field.

Field 110 is used for non-UN publications only.

For UN documents, see guidelines for tag 710.

When a corporate body is identified as responsible for a work, the authority-controlled name as found in the UNBIS Name Authority Files is entered in 110 $a.

If an UNBIS authority record for a corporate name does not exist, a new authority record is created.

Corporate names may be names of organizations and their subsidiary bodies and divisions, offices, projects and programmes; institutions, associations, centres, etc. Names of States or governments and their subsidiary departments and agencies are corporate names (but see below on names of countries as subjects).

A corporate name is used as a main entry in a bibliographic record for works that fall into the following categories:

  • those of an administrative nature dealing with the corporate body itself
  • some legal or governmental works, such as laws, constitutions and treaties (the name of the corporate body is followed by a uniform title enclosed in square brackets)
  • those that record the collective thought of the body (reports, etc.)
  • those that record the collective activity, such as meetings, of the body.
For certain types of serials, such as annual reports, however, the main entry is always the title, and the corporate name associated with the publication is recorded in tag 710.

When there is more than one corporate body identified with a work, the name of the first body is recorded in tag 110 and the names of up to two additional corporate bodies in tag 710.

For works about a corporate body, tag 610 is used.
Note, however, that names of countries as subjects are not 610 corporate subjects but 650 topical geographic subjects.
