UNOG (United Nations Office at Geneva) – Geneva, Switzerland
The UNOG Staff Development and Learning Section (SDLS) focuses on supporting organizational reform and helping to build a more multi-skilled and versatile international civil service. It also promotes and supports multilingualism through its Language Training Programme.
To help staff members (at all levels) to either acquire a new language or enhance existing linguistic knowledge, SDLS proposes, in the six official languages (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish), classroom based courses (from beginners to advanced levels). These courses are given 4 hours a week and focus on the four linguistic competencies of oral expression, written expression, oral comprehension and written comprehension.
At the same time, increased emphasis is being given to tailoring our programmes to suit the needs of specific groups and to work with individual teams to help improve competencies in a particular language. To answer this need, SDLS also regularly proposes specialized courses (oral expression, written expression, English in the workplace), directed self study courses (in French and in English), and provides access for participants and staff members to a Language Resources Centre where staff members can access pedagogical resources such as CD-ROMs, Cassettes, Videos, grammar, and reference books.
A full description of the language training programme and self-study opportunities is available on the Staff Development and Learning Section Intranet site: http://training.unog.un.org. (Please note that this site is only accessible to United Nations Secretariat staff.)
Eligibility criteria for language courses are as follows:

Please be informed that the UNOG Staff Development and Learning Section also offers the staff of the Secretariat in Geneva the opportunity to participate in training programmes on a range of subjects including management, supervision, communication, career support, negotiation and information technology. These programmes are only open to staff members of the United Nations.
UNON (United Nations Office at Nairobi) – Nairobi, Kenya

Intermediate and advanced classes can be organized for the 5 languages upon request as well as intensive courses which consist of ten 2 hour sessions with small groups of students (3 to 5 students). Individual tuition is also organized upon request.
