Democracy Fund Will Ensure People's Exercise of Their Democratic Rights 07 September 2006
"In his legacy Report on the Work of the Organisation, the Secretary-General addresses numerous issues related to Democracy-building and Democratic Governance. He refers in particular to the decision of the World Summit 2005 to establish the Democracy Fund as aimed at strengthening "the efforts of Governments, civil society and non-governmental actors and regional and international organizations that are striving to build and consolidate the pillars of democracy. The Fund - says the report - has attracted $49 million in pledged or contributed funds. The Fund will finance projects designed to empower civil society, strengthen the rule of law, increase popular participation and ensure that people are able to exercise their democratic rights."
