Newly Elected Parliaments in Post-Conflict Countries Need More Support

Magdy Martinez Soliman Executive Head a.i. of UNDEF and Ms. Randi Davis, Senior Programme Officer, participated in a Conference on Parliaments and Conflict Prevention and Recovery in Brussels on 21 April.

Over hundred donors and parliamentarians announced their support for new United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) guidelines designed to boost the vital role of parliamentarians in building peace and preventing crises in fragile states around the world. They also called upon the International Community to increase its assistance to representative institutions in the aftermath of conflict.

Donors and parliamentarians from various countries gathered in Brussels for a two-day conference aimed at challenging the traditional conflict prevention and peace-building strategies. UNDP, the Belgian Ministry of Development Cooperation and the Chamber of Representatives of Belgium jointly hosted the conference in association with the International Parliamentary Union.
