Members of the Hungarian Parliament visit UNDEF in New York

On 29 January 2008, thirteen members from the senior government Socialist party of the Hungarian Parliament, led by Mr. Attila Mesterházy, and the Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Hungary to the UN, H. E. Mr. Gábor Bródi, met with UNDEF’s Executive Head, Roland Rich.

The meeting began with an introduction by Mr. Rich in which he noted that Hungary had been a very active member on the UNDEF Advisory Board in 2006-2007. He then gave some historical examples of Hungary’s promotion of democracy internally and regionally. He said that Hungary’s successful transition to democracy is encouraging to other nations.

Among the topics addressed during the meeting were:

  • stability in the region of central Europe provided by democracy

  • the need to distribute the UNDEF's funding of projects equitably

  • the importance of trade unions as members of civil society

  • assistance to vulnerable groups

  • the problem of apathy among the younger members of the electorate

It was noted that the Budapest based International Centre for Democratic Transition had a partnership agreement with UNDEF and would continue to work closely with the UN on democracy promotion issues.
