Japan demonstrates strong support for the UN Democracy Fund by contributing US$ 10 million

The Permanent Representative of Japan before the United Nations, Ambassador Kenzo Oshima, addressed a letter to the Secretary-General communicating the engagement of his Government with the UN Democracy Fund. The text of the letter reads as follows: "Excellency, Japan attaches great importance to democracy as a universal value, as well as fundamental freedom, rule of law and human rights, which are the basis for the realization of happiness and prosperity of each individual. We consider the consolidation and strengthening of democratic institutions would lead to the establishment of a peaceful and prosperous society and in turn would contribute to the peace and stability of the whole world. Japan has supported the activities of the United Nations to assist in order to consolidate and strengthen democracies. I would like to inform you that the Government of Japan has decided to make a contribution to the United Nations Democracy Fund (UNDEF) in the amount of 10 million US dollars. The contribution will be made after completion of necessary domestic procedures. Japan sincerely hopes the assistance through the United Nations to those countries that wish to promote and consolidate their democracies would contribute to the realization of a peaceful and prosperous world."
