High Level Meeting on Peacebuilding in Central America

The Executive Head a.i. of UNDEF was invited to participate in the High-level Meeting on Peacebuilding in Central America, a conference organised by the Toledo International Centre for Peace, the Project on Justice in Times of Transition. Tufts University College of Citizenship and Public Service and Tufts University's Institute for Global Leadership. Participants ranged from former UN top-official Sir Marrack Goulding to the former Presidents of Dominican Republic, Mr. José Figueres, Guatemala, Mr. Vinicio Cerezo, and the Inter-American Development Bank, Mr. Enrique Iglesias, and former Foreign Ministers of Costa Rica, Mr. Madrigal Nieto, El Salvador, Mr. Chavez Mena, Colombia, Mr. Ramirez Ocampo, and Israel, Mr. Shlomo Ben-Ami, who is currently Deputy Chairman of the Toledo Centre. Participants had all played a significant role in the pacification of the sub-region and represented at some point in time governments, guerrillas, insurgent movements, the armed forces, peace commissions, the United Nations and Member States who offered their good offices in brokering the peace process in Nicaragua, Guatemala and El Salvador. Mr. Martinez-Soliman presented the broad lines of the UN reform and how both the UN Peacebuilding Commission and the UN Democracy Fund could in the future play an important role in the sub-region.
