Donations to the United Nations Democracy Fund hit over 50 million USD

The UN Democracy Fund has received contributions totaling over $50 million dollars. Sweden and Lithuania's contributions brought the sum total over the 50 Million USD bar. 27 Member States, namely, Australia, Chile, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, France, Georgia, Germany, Hungary, India, Ireland, Israel, Lithuania, Mongolia, Peru, Poland, Portugal, Qatar, Republic of Korea, Senegal, Slovenia, Spain, Sri Lanka, Sweden, United Kingdom, and the United States of America are the contributors of the Fund to date. Japan (see below) has announced a contribution of 10 million USD, which is expected to be disbursed in March 2007. Other donors that have shown interest recently are the European Commission, Italy, Latvia, Mali and New Zealand.

The level of contributions allows the Democracy Fund to plan forward for a second call for proposals in April-May 2007. In 2006, the 1st tranche of 125 projects was approved by the Secretary-General. Disbursement has been requested or processed for 48, for an amount of US$14.17 Million, or 39.3% of the total portfolio. For more information about Democracy Fund donors, click here.
