NewsNews from the Field: Organizing Women Against Corruption in Argentina 18 August 2009
In Argentina, UNDEF supports a pioneering project to fight the impact of corruption on women. Implemented by the Fundación Mujeres en Igualdad, M.E.I., the project organizes women in political parties and civil society to fight forms of corruption that affect their rights and hamper their social and economical progress. In 2009, M.E.I. produced a documentary “Gender and Corruption” to educate the public on a subject that remains sensitive and rarely discussed in Argentina. The documentary reviewed the work of M.E.I. as we all the International and Inter-American Forum of Women Against Corruption, covering issues from justice to communication to human trafficking. The film drew on the knowledge and experience of former and current public servants, members of specialized international agencies and civil society organizations. It showed how women, already disadvantaged, suffer all the more from the loss of resources caused by corruption, how gender inequality can obstruct women’s access to justice and information, and how women, as victims of corruption, can even be forced to pay with their bodies. Through this initiative, by empowering women to be informed citizens,
overseeing public funds, policies and management, UNDEF and M.E.I. are
working for democracy to serve as a framework for inclusion and the
rightful delivery of public policy. |
