UNDEF Projects
UNDEF PROJECT ROUNDS
The 1st Round of UNDEF funding began in 2007 for proposals that were submitted on 15 April to 15 May 2006.
- Over 1,300 proposals were received for project funding during the first cycle of applications. These represented some US$447 million in funding requests.
- 77% of the applications were for country-level projects from over 130 UN Member states, developing and developed. The rest were regional or global projects.
- 122 projects were funded for a total of US$35,201, 230.
- 38% of the projects funded have a gender equality focus.

The 2nd Round of UNDEF funding began in 2008 for proposals that were submitted from 15 November to 31 December 2007.
- Whereas there were 1300 applications for funding in the first round (2006), there were 1873 applications in the second round (2007), representing an increase of 44%.
- The total amount of funds requested in the 1873 applications was $655 million. Applications were received from 137 countries. Civil Society organizations were by far the largest category of applicants accounting for 85.9% of projects.
- 82 projects were funded for a total of $US 23,695,000.
- 34% of the projects funded have a gender equality focus.
The 3rd Round of UNDEF funding began in 2009 for proposals that were submitted at the end of 2008. UNDEF received 2,143 applications of which it funds 67 projects. The total amount approved for funding is $18,855,367.
- Whereas there were 1873 applications for funding in the first round (2007), there were 2,143 applications in the third round (2008), representing an increase of 14%.
- The total amount of funds requested in the 1873 applications was $678 million. Applications were received from 138 countries.

projects were funded for a total of $US 18,855,367, of which 82% were to be delivered by local civil society groups and a
further 16% by international civil society groups. - 35% of the projects funded have a gender equality focus.
The 4th Round of UNDEF funding began in 2010 for proposals that were submitted at the end of 2009. UNDEF received 1,966 applications of which it funds 65 projects. The total cost of these 65 projects is estimated at $16.33 million.
- UNDEF received 1,966 applications for its Fourth Round of Funding, reflecting sustained high global demand worldwide for support from the Fund.
- Applications were received from 137 countries, the vast majority local civil society organizations (CSOs) in Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean. There are five countries on the list in which UNDEF has not previously funded projects: Algeria, Angola, Mauritius, Laos and Vietnam.
- There are three projects in the global category (focusing on countries in more than one geographic region) and 12 regional projects (focusing on more than one country within a geographical region). There are 53 local projects (focusing on a single country). Accordingly, more than 80% of the projects are local.
- With the 65 projects on the short list, the total number of projects funded by UNDEF will rise to 336 in 104 countries.
