Target: Polio

Jonas Salk, Discoverer of Polio Vaccine From the discovery of the vaccine for smallpox to its eradication took 200 years. The first polio vaccine was discovered in 1955 by Jonas Salk. The disease is targeted for eradication by the year 2000 - less than 50 years after the vaccine was discovered.

*Since the launch of the eradication effort in 1988, the number of reported polio cases is down by 80 percent
*Polio has been eradicated from the Americas
*In all 145 countries in the world are polio-free
*300 million children, almost half the children in the world, received the vaccine during 1995
*Only 67 countries are still considered to be endemic, with the highest number of polio cases occurring in countries in the Indian subcontinent
