Fynbos: Kingdom Threatened

Last year, we decided to enter into the Cyberfair 98 webpage competition in the Environmental Awareness category. In our project we wanted to better the fate of fynbos, seen as some as the sixth plant kingdom. The south of Africa was not called the Cape of Storms by the early naval explorers for nothing. Fierce elements govern this terrain and have played a major role in the evolution of the flora. Wind, sun, rain and snow shaped fynbos into the remarkable pocket of diversity that it is; a diversity not easily equalled by any other place on Earth. But have YOU heard about fynbos? Probably not. Today fynbos is being threatened from all sides by human-related factors, and this closely knit ecosystem may fade silently into the night, while preference is given to lion and eagle. We tried to combat this, by taking the logical first step: informing. Creating awareness.
